In Thirtysomething season 1 episode 8, titled "Weaning", the gang's parental instincts become a major focus. Michael and Hope are having trouble weaning their baby daughter Janie from breastfeeding and have enrolled her into a daycare to try and ease her off. Michael is having a difficult time adjusting to the idea of leaving her while at work and hopes he can learn to trust the caregivers.

Meanwhile, Elliot and Nancy are trying to adopt a child. They receive a call that there's a new baby to adopt, but the biological mother is wanting to meet them in person before making her final decision. The couple have many concerns but decide to meet the mother and her baby.

Melissa is concerned with becoming a mother figure for the daughter of her boyfriend, Lee. His daughter is reluctant to warm up to Melissa and he's worried that he may not be ready to take on the responsibilities of a blended family.

Gary and Susannah have reached a bump in their relationship. Gary is upset that Susannah is not more involved in his work and doesn't understand the pressures that come with it. They try to have a heartfelt conversation but are unable to come to an agreement, leaving them in an awkward situation.

Throughout the episode, each of these couples struggle with their parental instincts and try to navigate their way through them. They discover that being a parent is never easy, but being there for each other is what ultimately helps them through tough times.
