  • October 30, 2003

This Old House Hour is a renovation and construction show that follows homeowners as they work with professionals to restore and update their houses. In season 2, episode 4, titled "Episode 4," the focus is on two separate projects that both involve restoring historic homes.

The first project takes place in Jamestown, Rhode Island, where a couple has purchased a Queen Anne Victorian home that was built in 1887. The couple has big plans for the home, including restoring many of the original details and adding modern conveniences. To help them with this project, the homeowners have enlisted the help of a team of experts including Tom Silva, Kevin O'Connor, Richard Trethewey, and Roger Cook.

During the first part of the episode, the team assesses the state of the home and creates a plan for the restoration work. They start by focusing on the home's exterior, which is in serious need of repair. They repair the damaged clapboard siding and rotting trim, and also install new windows and a new front door. Tom and Richard work together to rebuild the home's front porch, which had been poorly maintained and was in danger of collapsing. The team also takes on the challenge of restoring the home's original turret, which had been covered in asphalt shingles. They remove the shingles and carefully restore the original woodwork to bring the turret back to its former glory.

Inside the home, the team begins to tackle the many renovation projects that the homeowners have planned. These include updating the electrical system, adding insulation, and installing a new HVAC system. Tom works on rebuilding a staircase that had been removed at some point in the home's history, while Kevin and Richard install a new hot water heater and water softening system. The team also works on restoring some of the home's original architectural features, including a stunning stained glass window that had been damaged over time.

The second project featured in this episode takes place in Auburndale, Massachusetts, where a couple has purchased a 1910 Arts and Crafts style home. The couple wants to update the home to better fit their modern lifestyle while still preserving its historic charm. To help them with this project, they have turned to the experts at This Old House.

The team starts by assessing the home's existing layout and creating a plan for the renovation. They begin by opening up the first floor to create a more open, livable space. They remove some walls and install new beams to support the structure, and also plan to add a new deck off the back of the house to create an indoor/outdoor living space.

In addition to the structural changes, the team also focuses on updating the home's systems. They install a new HVAC system and update the electrical and plumbing. They also take on some smaller projects, including refinishing the home's original hardwood floors and creating custom cabinetry for the updated kitchen.

Throughout the episode, the team faces many challenges and setbacks, but they work together to overcome each one and restore these historic homes to their former glory. The homeowners are thrilled with the results, and viewers are left with a sense of admiration for the hard work and dedication that goes into restoring these historic properties.
