- February 11, 2010
This Old House Hour season 8 episode 15, titled "Roxbury Project, Part 3 of 10," follows the renovation of an historic 1849 Greek Revival house located in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The episode picks up where the previous installment left off, with the team from This Old House working to restore the home's original windows.
Host Kevin O'Connor meets with window restoration expert Alison Hardy, who demonstrates how to remove and repair the sashes of the double-hung windows. With the help of apprentice carpenter Jen Nawada, Kevin and Alison walk through the process of removing the windows from their frames, removing any old paint and glazing, and replacing any damaged or rotted wood.
Meanwhile, contractor Tom Silva and landscaper Roger Cook work on the home's exterior, repairing the foundation and grading the yard to improve drainage. They also tackle the daunting task of removing several large trees from the property, carefully dropping them so as not to damage the surrounding structures.
Back inside the house, certified kitchen designer Kathy Marshall meets with the homeowners to discuss the kitchen renovation. To preserve the historic character of the home, she suggests using salvaged materials where possible, such as an antique farm table for the island and reclaimed wood for the countertops. Together, they sketch out a plan for the new layout and appliances.
The episode also features a segment in which master electrician Allen Gallant explains the importance of installing a whole-house surge protector to protect electrical devices and appliances from power surges. He demonstrates how to install a surge protector in the home's main electrical panel.
As the episode comes to a close, the team reflects on the progress they've made thus far and looks ahead to the next steps in the renovation. With the windows restored, the exterior repaired, and the kitchen plans in place, the project is well underway, and the team is excited to see the home's transformation progress.
