  • August 31, 2002

In Trading Spaces season 3 episode 2, entitled Berkeley: Prospect Street, the teams head to Berkeley, California, to transform two neighboring houses on Prospect Street. It's a classic Trading Space challenge - each designer is given a budget of $1,000 and two days to complete the project.

The teams consist of designer Vern Yip and carpenter Ty Pennington on one side, and designer Laurie Smith and carpenter Edward Walker on the other. They are tasked with switching houses and redesigning a room in each other's homes.

The first house belongs to a couple named Bonnie and David. Their home is a charming Craftsman bungalow with a lot of original features. Bonnie and David are hoping for a more modern look that preserves the character of their home. Vern and Ty take on the challenge of transforming their living room.

Vern's design concept is to create a more open space by removing a half-wall that divides the living room from the dining room. He also wants to incorporate Bonnie's love of sewing into the room. Ty is tasked with creating a custom fireplace surround and built-in bookshelves.

Laurie and Edward take on the second house, which belongs to a young couple named Ramon and Thanh. Their home has a more contemporary style, with a mix of eclectic furnishings. Ramon and Thanh are hoping for a more cohesive look in their master bedroom.

Laurie's design concept is to create a calming oasis in the bedroom, using soft greens and blues. She wants to add a custom bed and window treatments, as well as creating a feature wall with wallpaper. Edward is tasked with creating a unique headboard and custom closet doors.

The teams get to work, with Vern and Ty immediately starting to remove the half-wall between the living room and dining room. They encounter some unexpected issues when they find out that the half-wall is supporting a load-bearing beam. They need to devise a solution that doesn't compromise the structure of the house.

Meanwhile, Laurie and Edward have their own challenges to overcome. They need to work around some existing built-ins in the master bedroom and also have some issues with the wallpaper they've chosen.

Throughout the episode, there are moments of drama as the teams race against the clock to finish their projects. There are also moments of humor as the designers and carpenters struggle with some of the unexpected challenges they encounter.

In the end, each team presents their newly redesigned room to the homeowners. There are moments of surprise and delight as the homeowners see the transformations. However, there are also moments of disappointment and frustration when some of the design choices don't quite hit the mark.

Overall, Berkeley: Prospect Street is a classic Trading Spaces episode with all the drama, humor, and design challenges that fans of the show have come to love.
