Trading Spaces is currently aired as re-runs, but for someone who has not watched the show, they will seem fresh and new. For eight seasons, Trading Spaces opened the doors for neighbors across the United States to become home interior decorators. The catch was that they were trading one room of their house for a room in their neighbor's house to redecorate. When the show first began, the show was about neighbors in the same vicinity, however in later seasons, neighbors were actually from different states, creating a change in the show.

Viewers become familiar with each neighbor on the show, and also get an idea about what each neighbor is interested in doing with their particular room. The show offers a home designer to assist each neighbor and also gives them each a budget any where from $1000 up to $3000 to create a fabulous room. The budget is very important, as this is how creativity comes to light. Staying within the budget keeps each neighbor on task and makes them get creative with their ideas, which isn't always as easy as it seems.

Each stage of the process is portrayed from one room location to the other. Viewers become close to the neighbors as they watch the collaboration between the designer and each neighbor. You will see overwhelming excitement by the neighbors finding the perfect choice items to match together. Each neighbor starts from scratch, dismantling or re-arranging the room to blend with the items purchased.

Each neighbor begins the process of adding their touches to the room, sometimes obstacles occur, but through teamwork each neighbor achieves success in decorating a fabulous room that is unveiled to the home owner on the last day of the show. Neither home owner gets to see the room once the show begins. At this point, it's time to unveil the room. Each neighbor smiles with joy, knowing that they would never have come up with those ideas. They get to compare and explain how and why they chose the items they did.
