High Fidelity is a movie about Rob, a 30-something record store owner, and his ragtag collection of music loving friends who work at and visit his store. Rob is a passionate list-maker. Whether it is a list of top five Monday morning songs or a list of women who have broken his heart, Rob takes his lists seriously. The movie begins with Rob in the throes of a mid-life crisis as he reels from his current heartbreak. Laura, his intelligent lawyer and live-in girlfriend, has recently left him because he seems stuck in a rut without any desire to change, which she needs from him. In denial that Laura makes his list of top five breakups of all time, Rob chronicles each one until he finally realize that Laura not only makes the list, but she is number one. Rob ponders what he can do to win back Laura's love and affection, trying to find the change that will attract her and that might even give him new direction while staying immersed in a world focused on and surrounded by music. The movie gives Generation X's perspective on a mid-life crisis and how to move forward.
