Brown Nation is an Indian-American comedy TV series that aired on Netflix in 2016. Created by Abi Varghese, George Kanatt and Matt Grubb, it follows the lives of an Indian-American couple, Raj and Simran Brown, and their struggles in adapting to life in the United States, while dealing with cultural clashes and the trials of running their own technology firm.
The show is set in Queens, New York, and centers around the lives of the Browns, who are a first-generation Indian-American family. Raj is the CEO of his own tech firm, Brown & Associates, which specializes in creating software solutions for small businesses. His wife Simran, on the other hand, is a homemaker who struggles to balance her family life with the daily stresses of living in a new country.
The show follows the Brownsâ day-to-day lives and the numerous ups and downs they face as they navigate the cultural differences that come with living in a new country. Raj is the embodiment of the American Dream, although he struggles to keep his company afloat in the face of stiff competition from rival firms. His quest for success is heightened by the cultural differences he experiences, as he is constantly trying to prove himself in a foreign land that has no respect for his Indian heritage.
Simran, on the other hand, is a devoted mother and wife who struggles to raise her two children in a culture that is vastly different from the one she grew up in. She is constantly trying to adapt to her new surroundings, but the cultural clash is not lost on her, and she often finds herself at odds with her husband over the best way to raise their children.
Adding to the eclectic mix of characters are Raj's younger brother Balan, played by Kapil Bawa, who is a well-meaning but bumbling genius who can never seem to get things right, and Roli, played by Shenaz Treasurywala who is an aspiring actress and the best friend of Simran.
Brown Nation is filled with hilarious moments, as our heroes learn to laugh at themselves while they try to navigate their way around American culture. The show touches on a wide range of topics that are relatable to anyone, from work-life balance, family dynamics, to the immigrant experience in America.
One of the key themes of the show is the Brown family's struggle to hold on to their cultural identities in the face of the pressures of assimilation. Raj, in particular, is constantly challenged by his colleagues and clients, who are often dismissive of his Indian background. His desire to fit in and succeed in the American corporate world leads him to make several compromises, but he ultimately realizes that he can never fully shed his Indian identity and embraces it in his work.
Another major theme of the show is the generation gap between the Brown siblings. Balan represents the younger generation, who have grown up in America and are fully assimilated into the culture, while Raj and Simran represent the older generation, who are still clinging to their Indian heritage. The conflict between the two generations provides for some of the funniest and most poignant moments of the show.
Overall, Brown Nation is a delightful comedy that tackles sensitive themes in a light-hearted manner. With brilliant writing, acting, and direction, the show is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys laughs and is interested in exploring the immigrant experience in America.
