Doug and Carrie find themselves in court in season 1 episode 17 of The King of Queens. The couple has an altercation at the DMV, which leads to them being given a court date.

At first, Doug is not concerned about the trial and believes that they can simply plead guilty and pay the fine. However, Carrie is more nervous and wants to prepare for the case. She hires a lawyer, Jeffrey, who is a friend of her cousin's husband.

Doug is not convinced that they need a lawyer and initially refuses to meet with Jeffrey. When he finally does meet with him, Doug is not impressed with his laid-back attitude towards the case. However, he changes his mind when Jeffrey pulls out a list of previous cases he's won and mentions that he's never lost in the court they'll be attending.

Carrie becomes annoyed with Doug's lack of concern for the case and his attempts to avoid it altogether. She starts to feel that he doesn't take their marriage seriously and that he's not willing to put in the effort when it comes to their relationship.

The day of the trial arrives, and the couple arrives at the courthouse with Jeffrey. Doug becomes more nervous as they wait for the judge to call their case, and he starts to worry about the consequences of being found guilty.

When their case is finally called, the prosecutor presents their arguments to the judge. Carrie's lawyer cross-examines the witnesses and presents evidence that proves their innocence. Despite their lawyer's efforts, the couple is found guilty.

Afterwards, Carrie is devastated and angry with Doug. She feels like he didn't take the case seriously enough and that they lost because of his lack of concern. Doug tries to make it up to her, but she is unwilling to forgive him.

In the end, Doug surprises Carrie by taking her out for a romantic dinner and admitting that he was wrong. He tells her that he takes their marriage seriously and that he wants to work together to make things right between them.

The episode ends with Carrie accepting Doug's apology, and the couple making up. Though they're unhappy with the outcome of their trial, they're both grateful for the chance to work on their relationship and to move forward together.
