Cynthia Nixon, the Emmy award-winning actress and star of Sex and the City, is the subject of the season 5 premiere of Who Do You Think You Are? In this episode, Nixon takes viewers on a journey to uncover the mysteries of her family's past.

Nixon grew up in Manhattan and her family has always been a bit of a mystery. She knows that her mother's side of the family is from Texas, but beyond that, she doesn't know much. As she begins her journey, Nixon admits that she hopes to find some connection to her mother, who passed away when Nixon was just a teenager.

To start her research, Nixon visits the Texas State Archives in Austin. It’s there that she discovers a wealth of information about her maternal grandmother, Clara. Clara’s father was a cotton farmer and one of the wealthiest men in Texas at the time. However, within just a few years, his fortune disappeared, and he died. The cause of his downfall is a story of political corruption and land theft that Nixon finds shocking.

Nixon’s search for information about her grandmother leads her to explore the Alamo, where she learns that her ancestor fought alongside Davy Crockett. She also visits a museum in Houston that features a quilt made by her grandmother. The quilt is a testament to the creative spirit that seems to have been passed down through the generations of Nixon's family.

From Texas, Nixon travels to Georgia to explore her father's side of the family. She's always been aware of her Scottish heritage, but she wants to know more. Her first stop is the University of Georgia, where she learns about her family's connection to the Scottish Highland Games. She is surprised to discover that her ancestors may have been responsible for bringing the Highland Games to America.

Nixon's journey takes her to a Presbyterian church in Augusta, where she learns about her great-great-great-grandfather, who was a Presbyterian minister. She discovers that her family has a strong religious background and that her ancestors were active members of their church community.

As she continues her exploration, Nixon uncovers a shocking discovery about her family's past. She learns that her great-great-great-grandfather on her father's side was a slave owner and that her family's wealth was built on the backs of enslaved Africans. Nixon is brought to tears by this revelation and struggles to come to terms with the knowledge that her family benefited from the oppression of others.

In the end, Nixon's journey through her family's past is one of discovery, surprise, and ultimately, acceptance. She learns that her family has a complicated history, filled with both triumphs and tragedy. Through it all, Nixon finds a sense of connection to her roots and comes away with a newfound appreciation for the strength and resilience of her ancestors.

Who Do You Think You Are? Season 5 Episode 1, featuring Cynthia Nixon, is a moving exploration of family history that will leave viewers with a greater understanding of their own family's past.
