This drama is based on a Broadway stage play by Leonard Spigelgass. Bertha Jacoby is a Jewish widow from Brooklyn sailing to Japan with her daughter and son-in-law who is an officer in the foreign service. She must confront her feelings of racial prejudice and her anger at her son's death during World War II at the hands of Japanese forces when she meets a millionaire widower from Tokyo onboard. When Koichi Asano expresses a personal interest in Mrs. Jacoby, she confides this to her daughter, who immediately objects to an interracial romance developing between widow and widower.
