Jim Carrey stars in one of his first movie roles as the cunning animal expert known only as in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. When the Miami Dolphins have their prize dolphin mascot stolen, a reward sparks the interest of a freelance missing animals expert, known as Ace. Given the high profile of the Dolphin's, the Miami Metro is tightly on the case as well, but find that they are not the only ones very quickly. Ventura's butting heads with their efforts every time they turn around. Who will find the dolphin first and restore it to its glory before the big game, if at all? Teaming up with a news reporter, played by Courtney Cox, Ventura sets to find the culprit by any measure possible. Even a trip to the mental hospital is in the deck of cards for this detective, as he goes undercover to find any clues he can as to the location of a disgruntled ex-teammate. What Ventura finds will only make the matter of returning the dolphin to its home only worse. Not only will he be faced with the saving of the dolphin, but he will have his own life in question as well. Just exactly how does the ex-player fall into the disappearing dolphin crime? Full of twists and turns, the captors keep on Ventura's case as well in order to prevent him from finding out the truth. What starts for them as a simple animal kidnapping will turn out to be the most difficult endeavor of their lives. With a detective like Ventura they will have an especially hard time attaining their goal in preventing Dan Marino, played by himself, from playing in the big game with the dolphin to stir up the crowd, leading them to victory. It won't take Ace long before realizing that he is on his biggest case to date, but will he be triumphant or become the laughing stock of the anti-crime world forever? Only time will tell.
