Veronica Guerin is the 2003 film about the Irish crime reporter who dared to butt heads with members of the local Irish drug syndicate. Guerin (Cate Blanchett) is a crime reporter who is concerned about the recent spike in drug related violence in the city. A number of beatings, murders and heroin overdoses begin to take its toll, and police and city officials seem powerless to stop the city takeover. Determined to unmask the individuals behind the Dublin drug trade, Veronica begins to interview local young drug addicts and put pressure rumored drug kingpins. Her investigation puts her in contact with local criminal John Traynor (Cirian Hinds), who pretends to help her finger drug lord John Gilligan (Gerald McSorley), but is only trying to take the heat off himself. Veronica's writings and face to face confrontations with suspected criminals put her life in danger, as well as the lives of her immediate family members. Veronica travels to Gilligan's country compound to confront him about the source of his vast wealth. Gilligan brutally brutally beats Veronica and banishes her from his property. Veronica is now more emboldened than ever to put Gilligan and his cohorts away. Veronica continues to dig into Gilligan's past and threatens to bring down Traynor as well. The plot to kill Veronica is now hatched. After Veronica shows up in court to answer to a number of unpaid traffic tickets, she is admonished by the judge, fined and let go. As Veronica leaves the court, she is followed and/or watched at prearranged points throughout the city. After her car is caught in standstill traffic on the Naas Road, she is assassinated by two gunmen on a motorcycle. The outrage behind Veronica's murder leads to new laws, which results in extensive jail time for Gilligan and the shooter, as well as the seizure of their assets.
