In this episode of Abandoned: Expedition Shipwreck, the team ventures to the North Sea in search of a lost fleet from World War I. The fleet, comprised of 52 German ships, was scuttled by their own navy in 1919 in an effort to prevent them from being seized by the Allies.
Led by host and maritime archaeologist Dr. James Delgado, the team sets out to locate and explore the wrecks of these forgotten vessels. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, including side scan sonar and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), the team begins their search.
Their first discovery is a massive shipwreck, over 300 feet in length, that they believe to be the SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm, a former German battleship. As they explore the wreck, they discover evidence of the ship's final moments before sinking to the ocean floor.
Next, the team discovers a wreck that they believe to be the SMS König, a German battleship that was part of the lost fleet. Using the ROVs, they are able to get an up-close look at the ship's hull and determine the cause of its sinking.
As they continue their search, the team encounters several more wrecks, including a U-boat that was lost in the same area during World War II. They also explore a large cargo ship that they believe to be carrying valuable cargo at the time of its sinking.
Throughout the episode, Dr. Delgado and the team provide insight into the historical significance of the lost fleet and the importance of preserving these wrecks for future generations. They also discuss the challenges of locating and exploring such deep sea wrecks and the measures that must be taken to protect them from further damage.
In the end, the team is able to uncover valuable information about the lost fleet and the events that led to their sinking. Their discoveries shed new light on one of the lesser-known chapters of World War I and highlight the importance of maritime archaeology in preserving our history.
