Oliver is recovering from his chest wound with the aid of Felicity and Diggle. As Diggle takes care of Oliver's injuries, he realizes that Oliver is not in good shape, physically and emotionally. In order to help his friend and employer, Diggle decides to take him to Lian Yu, the island where he was stranded for five years and where Oliver learned all of his survival skills. As they make their way to the island, they are hit by a missile, causing their plane to crash land. Oliver is badly injured, and Diggle has to fend for both of them while also trying to contact the outside world for help.
The episode cuts back and forth between the present on the island and flashbacks of the early days of Oliver's time on Lian Yu. In the flashbacks, it's revealed that Oliver made a friend on the island, a man named Yao Fei who taught him how to survive. As they became closer, Yao Fei revealed to Oliver that he had been captured by a group of mercenaries and forced to work for them. He begged Oliver to find a way to help him escape, which led to a dangerous mission deep into enemy territory. After narrowly escaping with their lives, Yao Fei rewards Oliver by taking him to a secret cave where he shows him a map of the island. Oliver realizes that the entire island is a training ground for something, but he can't put his finger on what.
Back in the present, Diggle has managed to make contact with Felicity back in Starling City. She has discovered that the missile that hit their plane was fired by a Chinese submarine, and that the Chinese government is sending in a team to recover any survivors. Oliver, still too weak to move, insists that Diggle leave him behind and go find a way off the island. Diggle refuses, reminding Oliver that he once promised him that he would never leave him behind.
As the Chinese team lands on the island, Diggle realizes that one of the men is an old acquaintance of his, a man named Edward Fyers. Fyers is the mercenary who captured Yao Fei and has been working for a mysterious organization that has been using the island for their own purposes. Diggle tries to make a deal with Fyers to get them all off the island, but Fyers double-crosses him and orders his men to kill everyone.
In the chaos that follows, Diggle manages to take out most of the mercenaries, but he is eventually captured. Oliver, who has regained some of his strength, manages to break them both free and they make a run for it. As they're running through the jungle, Oliver suddenly remembers what Yao Fei had been trying to tell him about the island. He leads Diggle to a hidden cave, where they find a group of men who have been living on the island for years. These men are members of a secret organization called the Brotherhood, and their mission is to fight against an evil organization known as the Tempest. The Tempest has been using Lian Yu to train soldiers for their own nefarious purposes, and the Brotherhood has been fighting against them in secret.
With this newfound knowledge, Oliver and Diggle set out to create a plan to take down the Tempest and get off the island once and for all. The episode ends with them hatching a daring plan that involves infiltrating the enemy's base and destroying their stockpiles of weapons.
Overall, "The Odyssey" is a thrilling and action-packed episode that takes the audience deeper into the mythology of the series. It also gives us a glimpse into Oliver's past and shows how he learned some of the skills that make him such a formidable force today. The relationship between Oliver and Diggle is also explored more deeply, as Diggle puts himself in harm's way to protect his friend and employer.
