Ep 22. Alaska Generator, Wood Floor

  • May 6, 2017

In season 15 episode 22 of Ask This Old House, the team travels to Alaska to help a couple install a backup generator for their remote cabin. Hosts Richard Trethewey and Kevin O'Connor head to the wilderness of the Last Frontier to lend a hand to homeowners who live off-the-grid in a remote cabin. The homeowners have been relying on a small gas-powered generator to power their home, but they need a more reliable backup system. To solve the problem, Richard and Kevin bring in a team of experts to install a Kohler generator, complete with a heating system to ensure it works in the extreme Alaskan winter weather.

While Richard and Kevin tackle the generator installation, Tom Silva helps a couple in Massachusetts with their flooring dilemma. The homeowners have an old, squeaky wood floor that they want to replace, but they are unsure of the right material to use. Tom teaches them about the different options available, including engineered hardwood, solid hardwood, and luxury vinyl plank. After seeing the samples and discussing their needs, the homeowners decide on engineered hardwood for its durability and ease of installation.

Back in Alaska, Richard and Kevin battle the elements as they work to install the Kohler generator. After taking measurements and making some tweaks to the placement of the generator, they begin the installation process. The installation involves a lot of heavy lifting and precise wiring, but the team works together to get the job done. To test the generator, they have to wait until the power goes out, which happens frequently during the harsh winter months in Alaska.

Meanwhile, Tom Silva returns to Massachusetts to help the homeowners remove the old flooring and prepare for the installation of the new engineered hardwood. After pulling up the old floorboards and making some repairs to the subflooring, Tom and the homeowners begin laying the new flooring. Tom teaches them how to use a nail gun to secure the planks and how to cut the ends to fit around corners and obstacles.

The episode ends with both teams successfully completing their projects. The homeowners in Alaska now have a reliable backup generator to ensure their home stays warm and powered during harsh winter weather. The Massachusetts homeowners have a beautiful new wood floor that adds value and style to their home. Throughout the episode, the hosts and experts share tips and tricks for successful DIY projects, making it a valuable resource for homeowners looking to tackle their own home improvement projects.
