Ep 3. Backsplash; Leak Detection; Rainwater

  • October 21, 2017

In this episode of Ask This Old House, the team tackles three different home improvement issues.

First, host Kevin O'Connor visits a homeowner in Massachusetts who wants to update her kitchen backsplash. Kevin works with tile contractor Tom Silva to remove the old backsplash and install a new one with a decorative design. They also demonstrate how to cut and place tile around outlets and switches.

Next, Kevin and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey help another homeowner who has a mysterious leak in their basement. Richard uses a specialized camera and detection equipment to locate the source of the leak, which turns out to be a crack in a pipe. He demonstrates how to fix the leak using an epoxy coating.

Finally, landscape contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner set up a rainwater collection system. Roger explains the benefits of collecting rainwater, including reducing water bills and conserving resources. He installs a barrel beneath the homeowner's downspout and demonstrates how to attach a hose to the barrel and use the collected water for watering plants and washing outdoor equipment.

Throughout the episode, the team provides helpful tips and insights for viewers looking to tackle similar home improvement projects.
