Big Food Bucket List is a television series that is all about the most outrageous and delicious foods from around the world. In each episode, the show's host, John Catucci, travels to different locations, trying out the biggest and most satisfying dishes that the area has to offer. In season two, episode three, titled "All in a Donut's Work," John visits a number of donut shops across the United States in search of the most innovative and indulgent varieties.
The episode begins with John making his way to Portland, Oregon. Known for its quirky and diverse food scene, Portland is home to a number of incredible donut shops, and John is eager to try out some of the best. His first stop is at Voodoo Doughnut, a local favorite that has been around for over a decade. Despite the long lines outside, John is determined to get his hands on some of Voodoo's well-known creations, such as the Bacon Maple Bar and the Old Dirty Bastard, a glazed donut covered in chocolate frosting, Oreo cookies, and peanut butter.
Next, John takes a short trip to Eugene, Oregon, where he visits Blue Star Donuts. Unlike Voodoo, which is known for its over-the-top, Instagram-worthy creations, Blue Star specializes in classic, simple flavors made from high-quality ingredients. John tries out a few of their more popular options, such as the Blueberry Bourbon Basil and the Chocolate Almond Ganache, before moving on to his next destination.
John's next stop is in Denver, Colorado, where he pays a visit to the family-owned shop, Donut Maker. Here, he meets the owner, Steve, who has been making donuts since he was a teenager. Steve shows John how he makes his classic raised donuts from scratch, using a special yeast and letting the dough rise for several hours. John tries out a number of different creations, including the Buttermilk Bar and the Rocky Mountain Cream, a donut filled with rich chocolate cream and covered in powdered sugar.
After Denver, John heads to Austin, Texas, where he visits Gourdough's Big Fat Donuts. Known for their extravagant toppings and large portions, Gourdough's is the perfect place for John to indulge in some over-the-top creations. He tries out several options, such as the Black Out, a donut covered in chocolate frosting, brownie bites, and chocolate chips, and the Mother Clucker, a donut topped with fried chicken and honey butter.
Finally, John ends his journey in Brooklyn, New York, where he visits Dough. Here, he tries out unique flavors like the Blood Orange and the Chocolate Salted Toffee, as well as the shop's well-known hibiscus donut. With its bright pink frosting and floral flavor, the hibiscus donut is a standout among the other options.
Throughout the episode, John speaks with the owners and employees at each shop, learning more about the history and inspiration behind each creation. He also takes part in the donut-making process himself, trying his hand at rolling and cutting dough, as well as decorating with various toppings and icings. By the end of the episode, John has tasted some of the most unique and delicious donuts from across the country and gained a deeper appreciation for the artistry and creativity that goes into making these sweet treats.
