The Things We Do, the twelfth episode of Chicago Med's fourth season, explores the lengths that people will go to for those they love. As the episode opens, Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) grapples with a tough decision. Her mother, who has been battling rheumatoid arthritis for years, is experiencing seizures that have left her brain damaged and in need of long-term care. Natalie struggles with the idea of putting her mother in a long-term care facility and decides to take some time off work to care for her.
As Natalie cares for her mother, her colleagues at Chicago Med are busy handling a variety of cases. The episode sees Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) tackle a case involving a patient who has become addicted to painkillers after a car accident. As he tries to help the patient overcome his addiction, Connor brings up difficult memories from his past.
Meanwhile, Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has his own struggles to deal with. After a patient dies on his operating table, Will becomes obsessed with figuring out what went wrong. His quest for answers takes a toll on his personal relationships, as he pushes away those who care about him.
As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that the theme of sacrifice is at the heart of The Things We Do. Whether it's Natalie giving up her career to care for her mother, or Will risking everything to find the truth about his patient's death, the characters are forced to make difficult choices that have far-reaching consequences.
Despite the heavy subject matter, The Things We Do is not without its lighter moments. One of the standout scenes of the episode involves Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) trying to teach his girlfriend, April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta), how to drive a stick shift. The scene is goofy and sweet, providing a much-needed break from the more emotionally intense storylines.
Overall, The Things We Do is a solid episode of Chicago Med that offers plenty of drama and character development. While some of the plotlines may be predictable, the strong performances from the cast keep things engaging. Fans of the show will not be disappointed with this installment.
