  • October 29, 2010

Come Dine With Me is a reality TV show that has been loved by audiences since 2005. The format of the show is rather simple, a group of people who are strangers to each other take turns to host dinner parties. As a host, they cook a three-course meal and entertain the guests. The guests then rate each other on the quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the overall experience. The contestant with the highest score at the end of the week wins a cash prize of £1000.

In season 14 episode 1 of Come Dine With Me, we meet contestants from Sheffield. This episode is called "Sheffield - All in One". The episode starts with the host introducing themselves- Jo. Jo is an operations manager and describes her cooking as "not too bad." She explains that her menu for the evening is inspired by her multicultural background, and she will be cooking a fusion of her Jamaican and Polish heritage.

Jo starts off by serving her guests some Jamaican jerk chicken alongside some coleslaw and sweet potato wedges. The guests seem to enjoy the dish and are impressed by the level of spice. The main course is a beef stroganoff served with rice, which is a Polish dish. Jo's guests like the dish, and one of them even declares that it's the best stroganoff they've ever had. For dessert, Jo serves a Jamaican-style banana fritter with ice cream. The guests loved the fusion of flavors, unique presentation, and Jo's excellent use of seasoning throughout.

The second host in this episode is Harriet. She is a 30-year-old personal trainer with a passion for health and fitness. For her dinner party, she decides to cook a three-course vegan meal, believing it to be an excellent way to showcase her skills, values, and lifestyle. She starts by serving avocado bruschetta, followed by a thyme and portobello mushroom Wellington with roasted carrots and parsnips. For dessert, Harriet serves a vegan tiramisu. The guests are amazed at the flavors and the creativity of a vegan menu. The scoring, however, is mixed with one guest left wanting for something a bit more hearty.

On the third night, we meet Jake, a self-confessed laddie who is hoping to win the cash prize by showcasing his love for meat. His menu features a variety of meat including chicken wings, spareribs, and lollipop lamb chops. For his main course, he serves surf and turf, and for dessert, he offers a sea salt and honeycomb cheesecake. The guests appreciate Jake's decision to serve meat, giving him high scores for the authenticity of the dishes. However, some of his guests fail to give him top scores, citing that the dishes could have had more finesse in their taste.

Next up is Julian, a fashionista with eclectic tastes and an eye for detail. He has gone all-out with his dinner party; from the flamboyant decoration to the extravagant menu. He starts off with an oyster trio, followed by lobster tail and chorizo risotto. For dessert, he serves a chocolate fondant with raspberry sorbet. All of Julian's guests are thoroughly impressed with the presentation and the taste. However, some feel that he may have overdone it and lost the "home-cooking vibe" that the show is known for.

The final host is Mo, who describes himself as a "Jack of all trades." Mo, who loves cooking and experimenting with flavors, has decided to go for a Middle Eastern-themed dinner party. He starts off by serving some homemade hummus and flatbreads. For the main course, Mo serves lamb koftas with couscous and a mint yogurt dressing, followed by baklava for dessert. The guests are taken aback by the quality of the food. They particularly appreciate Mo's "stick to basics" approach, with one guest saying that it was "the best dinner party yet."

All in all, the Sheffield episode of Come Dine With Me offers a unique insight into the region's diverse culinary landscape. The dinner parties are a wonderful display of the contestants' passions, lifestyles, and creativity. Although each host had their hit and misses, the guest's impression will ultimately decide the £1000 winner.
