In Concrete Revolutio season 1 episode 6, "They Are Always Laughing," the story follows a group of superheroes, each with their unique abilities with some capable of flying and dishing out powerful punches, while others can control shadows and bend metal with ease. As they look to keep their humanity intact amidst the chaos of post-war Japan, the group attempts to navigate a world where superheroes are no longer seen as helpful protectors but as oppressive forces of fear.
The episode opens with Emi Kino, a young girl with a powerful ability to bring objects to life, working in a theme park where she’s forced to use her abilities to entertain children. Her friend, Akira, who has the power of super strength, is also part of the entertainment group. Emi finds herself in a dangerous situation that forces her to use her powers, but when things go awry, Akira and the other superheroes help quell the situation. However, their involvement sparks a wider issue.
Following the incident at the theme park, a group of anti-superhero activists begin to protest against their presence in society. The superhero group is forced to reckon with their past and make a decision about their role in society moving forward. The system of justice they believed in has seemingly failed them, and the people they tried to protect have turned on them.
Through flashbacks, we see how some of the superheroes, like Jiro Hitoyoshi, a man with the ability to metamorph into a gun, fought for Japan during World War II. Jiro also worked as a government agent under Special Task Force for Cultural Properties Preservation Section, where he alongside his team was tasked with protecting the souls of living things by suppressing those controlled by foreign powers.
The episode takes a deep look at how society's fear, their pain, and their confusion can often lead them to do terrible things to those they see as "other." The superheroes find themselves in a world where their powers are no longer seen as a force of good, but instead a threat to the people’s existence.
Amidst this angst, a mysterious woman appears - Kikko Hoshino. The superheroes are uncertain of her intentions, but she seems to be hiding something. Kikko is the only one who doesn’t seem to be fazed by the growing anti-superhero sentiment and the group's past.
As Jiro and the rest of the superheroes come to terms with the challenges they’re facing, they realize that they must accept their flaws and move forward. They are no longer the heroes that they once were, but they can still make a difference. They may have to fight harder, but they now know what they’re fighting for.
Overall, "They Are Always Laughing" offers a deeper look at the characters' personal struggles, the consequences of their past actions, and the challenges they’ll face in the future. The episode showcases the show's mastery of making the audience feel empathy for the characters and their predicaments. It's a perfect addition to the Concrete Revolutio's carefully crafted plot and dialogue, delving deeper into the grittier and darker aspects of the world it's portraying.
