In episode 2 of Dark Shadows: The Beginning, the mysterious and brooding Barnabas Collins becomes even more enigmatic as strange occurrences continue to unfold in Collinwood. Victoria Winters, the governess hired to care for the young David Collins, is determined to uncover the secrets of the family she now works for. She learns that Barnabas has been locked away in a secret room for over 15 years and is now released, seemingly without a plan or motive.

Meanwhile, the strange happenings at Collinwood continue, with furniture moving by itself and unexplained fires breaking out. The Collins family is on edge and they turn to Barnabas for answers. However, Victoria begins to wonder if Barnabas might be involved in these strange events, as she notices his strange behavior and his reluctance to answer her questions about his past.

As the episode progresses, we see glimpses of Barnabas' past haunt him, including his love for a woman named Josette and his hatred for her fiancé, Jeremiah. Victoria discovers a locket with Josette's picture in Barnabas' room and begins to piece together the history of this strange and mysterious man.

As the night wears on, tensions rise in Collinwood, with the family ultimately finding themselves in danger. In a dramatic moment, Barnabas steps forward to protect them, but the question remains: is he friend or foe?
