In this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, host Guy Fieri takes viewers on a culinary journey through the diverse and delicious cuisine of New York City. From classic delis to trendy gastro-pubs, the Big Apple is home to a wealth of iconic eateries and unique flavors.
First up, Fieri visits Katz's Delicatessen in the Lower East Side. This legendary deli has been serving up mile-high pastrami sandwiches and other classic Jewish fare since 1888. Fieri chats with the owner and samples some of the deli's most beloved sandwiches, including the pastrami on rye and the matzo ball soup.
Next, Fieri heads to The Halal Guys, a food cart in midtown that has become a sensation among locals and tourists alike. The menu is simple but flavorful, featuring chicken, beef, falafel, and rice platters topped with the restaurant's signature white sauce and fiery hot sauce. Fieri digs in and speaks with some of the regulars who swear by the cart's addictive flavors.
Moving on to Brooklyn, Fieri makes a stop at Roberta's, a hip pizzeria known for its inventive toppings and wood-fired crusts. The owner gives Fieri a tour of the restaurant's lush garden, where many of the ingredients for the pizzas are grown, and then they head inside to sample some of the unique pies on the menu. Fieri tries the Bee Sting pizza, which features spicy soppressata and honey, and the Famous Original, a classic margherita with a twist.
After pizza, Fieri jumps across the East River to Queens to check out Little Alley, a Chinese restaurant known for its soup dumplings. Fieri gets a behind-the-scenes look at how the dumplings are made and then sits down to feast on a variety of dishes, including the soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, and stir-fried vegetables with crispy pork.
Next, Fieri heads down to Harlem to visit Red Rooster, a modern soul food restaurant owned by renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson. Fieri sits down with Samuelsson to learn about the inspiration behind his cooking and then samples some of the restaurant's most popular dishes, including the fried yardbird and the mac and greens.
Finally, Fieri wraps up the episode at Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn, a no-frills pizzeria that has been a local favorite for over 50 years. The owner, Domenico DeMarco, is a true master of pizza-making and has spent his entire life perfecting his technique. Fieri watches as DeMarco lovingly crafts each pie by hand and then gets to taste the finished product, which he declares one of the best pizzas he's ever had.
