  • April 29, 2008

Embarrassing Bodies is a reality TV show that helps individuals with embarrassing health conditions. In season 1 episode 2 of the show titled "Breasts", we see the show's team of medical experts traveling around the UK to assist individuals who are experiencing problems with their breasts.

The episode begins with the team meeting a young woman named Lillie, who has inverted nipples. They explain to her that inverted nipples are caused by a condition where the milk ducts in the breast pull the nipple inward instead of outward. The team suggests that Lillie undergoes a surgery to correct the condition.

The next patient we meet is a woman named Claire, who has very large breasts that are causing significant back pain. She explains how difficult it is to find clothes that fit properly, and how her breasts have affected her self-confidence. After a consultation with the team, Claire decides to undergo a breast reduction surgery to alleviate her pain and improve her quality of life.

The show then introduces us to a woman named Joanne who has had her breast implants for over 20 years. She explains how they have become hard and uncomfortable, and she is interested in having them removed. The team explains that breast implants are not meant to last forever, and that Joanne should have them removed and replaced with new ones. They reassured Joanne that breast implant removal surgery is a straightforward procedure.

Next, we meet a teenage girl named Rachael who has developed one breast much bigger than the other, which is very distressing for her. After undergoing a series of tests, it is revealed that Rachael has a condition called breast asymmetry, which can be corrected with a breast implant. The team suggests that Rachael wait until she is older before undergoing a surgery.

Lastly, the show introduces us to Tessie, who had breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy, which is the surgical removal of one or both breasts. The team provides Tessie with support and advice on breast reconstruction, which is the rebuilding of a breast after mastectomy. They explain that breast reconstruction can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or later on.

Throughout the episode, the team provides in-depth explanations of each breast condition we are presented with. They show the surgeries step-by-step, and interview each patient post-surgery on what their results and outlook is. The show highlights the emotional and physical impact each breast condition has had on the patient's life and how satisfied they are with the results of their surgeries.

Overall, the second episode of Embarrassing Bodies Season 1 is informative and eye-opening. It provides information on the various surgeries and procedures available for individuals with different breast conditions, and the sensitivity and professionalism of the medical team and their approaches to these issues remains ingrained through the episode. The show does an excellent job of educating the audience while paying close attention to privacy and cultural/humanistic sensitivity. It shows how each individual's lives are impacted, positively in most cases, after undergoing a corrective procedure.
