In the fourth episode of the first season of Extraordinary Places to Eat, host Fred Sirieix travels to the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastian in northern Spain.
Known for its stunning beaches, picturesque old town, and vibrant culinary scene, San Sebastian is a food lover's paradise. Fred sets out to explore the city's rich gastronomic heritage and meet some of the chefs and restaurateurs who are leading the way in the local food scene.
Fred's first stop is at La Viña, a famous pintxos bar that's been serving up tasty Basque snacks for over 80 years. He chats with the owner, Santiago Rivera, who explains the tradition of pintxos and shows Fred how to make one of their signature dishes, a deliciously cheesy tortilla de camarones.
Next, Fred heads to one of San Sebastian's most innovative and acclaimed restaurants, Mugaritz. Led by chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, Mugaritz is known for its avant-garde cuisine and experimental techniques. Fred gets a behind-the-scenes look at the restaurant's food lab, where Andoni and his team develop new dishes and flavors using cutting-edge technology.
For a taste of more traditional Basque cuisine, Fred visits the historic fishing village of Getaria, just a short drive from San Sebastian. There, he meets up with chef Elkano Arbelaitz, who runs the renowned Elkano restaurant. Elkano specializes in grilled seafood, and Fred joins him on a fishing trip to catch some of the fresh fish that will be served at the restaurant later that day.
Back in San Sebastian, Fred stops by one of the city's oldest and most iconic restaurants, Casa Urola. Founded in 1956, Casa Urola is known for its classic Basque dishes and cozy, traditional atmosphere. Fred talks to owner and head chef, Pablo Loureiro, about the importance of keeping old culinary traditions alive in a rapidly-changing world.
Finally, Fred heads to the Basque Culinary Center, a cutting-edge educational institution that's training the next generation of Basque chefs. He meets with director Joxe Mari Aizega and some of the students, who show him around the state-of-the-art culinary facilities and share their passion for the region's food and culture.
Throughout the episode, viewers get a taste of the wide range of flavors and styles that make San Sebastian's culinary scene so unique and exciting.
