Ashaki and Chris are a young couple in their twenties who have been together for five years, but have never been able to make their relationship work. They have been living together for four years and want to get married, but their families do not approve. Ashaki's family thinks Chris is not a good match for her because he is not ambitious enough and has no stable job. Chris's family thinks that Ashaki is too controlling and demanding, and they worry that she will force him to change who he is.
The couple agrees to join the show Family or Fiancé to try to reconcile with their families and get their blessings to move forward with their wedding plans. The show brings together Ashaki's family and Chris's family for a weekend retreat. During the weekend, they will all live together, participate in activities, and have candid conversations about their concerns and issues with the couple.
The issues between the families arise almost immediately. Ashaki's family is upset that Chris does not have a steady job, and that he is not taking enough initiative to provide for their daughter. They worry that he will never be able to take care of Ashaki and their future family because he lacks ambition. Chris's family, on the other hand, is upset with Ashaki's controlling behavior. They feel that she is trying to force Chris to change his personality and interests to be more like her, and that this is not healthy for their relationship.
Throughout the weekend, the couple and their families participate in various activities planned by the show's producers to help them communicate better and address their concerns. They have group discussions, one-on-one conversations, and even participate in a trust exercise that requires them to fall backward and trust each other to catch them.
Despite some challenges, the retreat is overall a positive experience for everyone involved. Ashaki and Chris are able to clear up some misunderstandings and misconceptions that their families had about them, and their families are able to see firsthand how much they love each other and are committed to making their relationship work.
In the end, both families agree to support the couple and give their blessing for the wedding. Ashaki and Chris are grateful for the opportunity to bring their families together and reconcile their differences. They leave the retreat feeling confident and excited for their future together as a married couple.
