Ep 1. The Vast Wasteland

The Vast Wasteland is the very first episode of the highly popular anime series Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma. The show is set in the world of culinary arts and follows the story of Soma Yukihira, a young boy with big dreams of becoming a great chef like his father.

The students are equally impressive, with many of them coming from famous culinary families or having prestigious work experience.

Soma soon meets a fellow first-year student named Megumi Tadokoro, who is extremely nervous and shy. Megumi comes from a small town and has never experienced anything like Totsuki Academy before. Soma takes her under his wing and shows her around the campus, introducing her to some of the other students.

Despite his friendly demeanor, Soma quickly makes enemies with some of the other students. His confident attitude and unconventional cooking methods quickly rub some of the other first-years the wrong way. One such student is named Erina Nakiri, who is a member of the Nakiri family, a powerful family with a long history in the world of culinary arts. Erina is known for her incredible palate and harsh critique of other people's cooking.

The episode culminates in Soma's first cooking challenge at Totsuki Academy. The students are split into groups and tasked with making a dish that represents their own culinary style. Soma decides to make a dish that reflects the spirit of the Yukihira restaurant, a simple but hearty pork dish. His dish is pitted against the other students' creations, which range from elaborate French cuisine to traditional Japanese dishes.

The judges for the event are the elite ten, a group of the top ten students at Totsuki Academy who have proven themselves to be the most talented chefs. The judges sample each dish one by one, and the tension in the room is palpable as they give their critiques.

In the end, Soma's dish is declared the winner, much to the shock and surprise of the other students. His dish is praised for its simple yet bold flavors and its ability to showcase his unique culinary style.
