In season 2 episode 3 of Forever Knight entitled "Stranger Than Fiction," we see detective Nick Knight and his partner Tracy Vetter investigating a string of bizarre murders. The murders seem to be mimicking scenes from a popular book series named "Crypt of the Night," and the detectives soon discover that the author of the books, named Gabriel Schaffer, is in town for a book signing.

As they try to link Schaffer to the murders, they soon realize that the killer is someone who is obsessed with the book series, and is killing people to recreate scenes from the books. The killer seems to have a particular fixation on the character of The Paladin, and the detectives begin to question whether the killer sees himself as the hero of the story or the villain.

As they get closer to finding the killer, Nick begins to struggle with his own identity as a vampire. He looks to Schaffer for guidance, hoping that the author can offer some insight into the nature of good and evil. Schaffer is hesitant at first to talk to Nick, afraid that his own experiences might reveal something about the killer's motives. But Nick is persistent, and the two finally sit down to talk.

As they converse, Schaffer tells Nick about a time in his life when he was consumed by darkness. He talks about how writing the "Crypt of the Night" series helped him to overcome his inner demons, and how he hopes that his stories can offer readers a way out of their own struggles. Schaffer's words resonate with Nick, who begins to see that his own existence as a vampire does not necessarily consign him to a life of evil.

The episode builds to a tense climax as Nick and Tracy confront the killer in a dark warehouse. The killer has kidnapped Schaffer, and is using him as a pawn in his final game. As Nick and Tracy delve deeper into the warehouse, they begin to realize that they are part of the story that the killer is telling. But they also understand that they have the power to change the ending.

In the end, Nick emerges victorious, but not without a newfound understanding of his own identity. He sees that his life as a vampire can be a force for good, and that he can use the darkness within him to fight against evil. The episode ends with Nick and Tracy discussing what they have learned, and how they will use that knowledge to continue fighting crime.
