Gunsmoke season 2 episode 6, titled "Indian White," takes place in the Wild West town of Dodge City, Kansas in the late 1800s. The episode begins with a man named Luke Frazer (played by John Alderson) arriving in town. Luke is a white man who was raised by Native Americans and has come to Dodge City to start a new life.
When Luke arrives in town, he is immediately greeted with suspicion and prejudice by some of the townspeople, who are skeptical of his Native American ties. This is especially true of a rancher named Jeb Crater (played by Ted de Corsia), who has a deep-seated hatred of Native Americans. Jeb's prejudice is fueled by a recent raid on his ranch, which he believes was carried out by a neighboring tribe.
In an effort to prove himself to the townspeople, Luke gets a job working for the local blacksmith. However, when Jeb Crater's ranch is hit by another raid, the townspeople immediately assume that Luke was involved. Matt Dillon (played by James Arness), the town's marshal, investigates the raid and quickly clears Luke's name.
Despite this, the townspeople's prejudice against Luke continues, and he becomes the target of many cruel jokes and remarks. This takes a toll on Luke, and he begins to feel like an outcast in his own town. The situation only worsens when it is discovered that he has fallen in love with a Native American woman named Lily (played by Lisa Lu).
Things come to a head when Jeb Crater decides to take matters into his own hands and attack a nearby Native American tribe in retaliation for the raids on his ranch. Luke knows that this act of violence will only lead to more bloodshed and decides to take matters into his own hands. He confronts Jeb and tries to reason with him, but Jeb is too blinded by his hatred to listen.
In the end, it falls to Matt Dillon to restore peace to the town. He brokers a deal between the two tribes and convinces the townspeople to accept Luke and Lily's love. The episode ends with Luke and Lily being accepted into the community, and Luke finally being respected for who he is, regardless of his background.
Overall, "Indian White" is a powerful episode about the dangers of prejudice and the importance of acceptance. It shines a light on the challenges faced by Native Americans and those who are of mixed race in the Old West, while also highlighting the role that individuals can play in bridging gaps and overcoming hatred. With a strong cast and well-written plot, this episode is a standout in the Gunsmoke series.
