Marshal Matt Dillon is back in action in Gunsmoke season 4 episode 4. This time, the town of Dodge City is in danger of being taken over by a ruthless businessman named Ollie Harper, who has bought almost every business in town and is determined to control the rest. What's worse, he's using his power to force the other business owners to sell to him at a fraction of their worth by threatening to cut off their supply of goods.

As the episode begins, Matt is appalled by Harper's plan and tries to mediate between the businessman and the other business owners. However, it soon becomes clear that Harper is not interested in any sort of compromise and is willing to use any means necessary to achieve his goal. When one of the business owners is found murdered, suspicion falls on Harper, and Matt faces the daunting task of proving his guilt in court without angering the townspeople too much.

Meanwhile, Doc Adams is dealing with his own problems. His new assistant, John, is turning out to be more trouble than he's worth. The young man is constantly getting into scrapes, drinking too much, and generally making a nuisance of himself. Doc is torn between his desire to help John and his increasing frustration with his behavior.

The tension in Dodge City continues to mount as Harper becomes more and more aggressive in his business dealings. Matt and his deputies are kept on their toes as they try to prevent any further violence. When the trial of the suspected murderer finally arrives, Matt finds himself in the middle of a complex web of lies and deceit.
