Lucy and the 20-20 Vision is the 18th episode of the third season of the classic American sitcom Here's Lucy. The show originally aired on February 7, 1972, on CBS. The episode features the iconic comedic actress Lucille Ball, who plays Lucy Carter, a single mother with two teenage children - Kim and Craig.
As the episode begins, Lucy decides to get contact lenses to improve her vision. She’s tired of constantly misplacing her glasses and having to squint to read small print. Lucy has a fear of doctors and optometrists, so she convinces her friend, Harry Carter (played by Gale Gordon), to take her to the eye doctor's office.
Upon arriving at the eye doctor's office, Lucy is met with a snooty receptionist who insists that she fill out a form before seeing the doctor. Lucy, being her usual clumsy self, fumbles with the pen and ends up breaking it. The receptionist tries to take advantage of Lucy’s mistake and tells her that she has to pay for the pen. Harry steps in and quickly diffuses the situation by paying for the pen.
After filling out the form, Lucy is called in to see the eye doctor, who turns out to be a very attractive young man. His good looks intimidate Lucy, and she feels embarrassed about her appearance in front of him. She tries to flirt with him, but it doesn't go well as he thinks she’s there to see him for her son Craig.
After the exam, the doctor tells Lucy that her vision is worse than she thought, and she needs to wear glasses full-time or get contact lenses. Lucy is hesitant to wear glasses, as she fears it will make her look old. The doctor assures her that plenty of young people wear glasses. He also informs her that contact lenses are an option but are expensive.
Harry convinces Lucy to get the contact lenses, and she reluctantly agrees. However, she has difficulty learning to put them in, and she keeps dropping them. Finally, Harry takes over and demonstrates how to put them in. Lucy has problems getting them out, but eventually, she gets the hang of it.
Lucy returns home wearing her new contact lenses, but Kim and Craig fail to notice the difference in her appearance. Lucy tries to show off her new look by wearing different outfits, but her kids remain unimpressed. Finally, Lucy reveals that she has contact lenses, and her kids are amazed.
In the end, Harry stops by and watches Lucy apply her contacts, but he can't watch it without squinting. Lucy, realizing that Harry is nearsighted, gives him her glasses to try on. Harry puts them on and is amazed at how clear everything looks. The episode ends with Harry running around in Lucy's glasses, and Lucy just happy to be able to see better.
Lucy and the 20-20 Vision is a hilarious episode that showcases Lucy’s typical slapstick comedy and zany antics. The episode also highlights Lucy’s fear of doctors and her vanity, which were recurring themes throughout the series. Despite its age, the episode remains entertaining and relevant to this day.
