Imaginary Mary is a family comedy television series that aired on ABC in 2017. The show tells the story of Alice (Jenna Elfman), a successful public relations executive who has spent her entire life avoiding serious relationships. Alice has always relied on her own wit and intelligence and has never allowed herself to be vulnerable enough to let anyone into her life. However, everything changes when she meets Ben (Stephen Schneider), a divorced father of three who challenges her beliefs about love and relationships.

As Alice’s relationship with Ben progresses, she is forced to confront her own fears and insecurities. However, she is not facing these challenges alone. Whenever she feels overwhelmed or uncertain, an imaginary friend from her childhood named Mary (voiced by Rachel Dratch) appears to offer her guidance and support.

At the start of the show, Mary is merely a voice in Alice's head, but as the series progresses, she becomes increasingly real, eventually taking on a physical form. Mary provides Alice with advice and encouragement, but she also has her own agenda. She is not always supportive of Alice’s relationship with Ben and often tries to sabotage it.

One of the show's most significant themes is the idea of growing up and learning to let go of the past. Alice's relationship with Mary represents her connection to her childhood and the innocence she has lost. However, as Alice's relationship with Ben deepens, Mary becomes increasingly anxious and desperate to hold on to Alice. This tension between Alice’s past and her present creates a compelling narrative arc that keeps the audience engaged.

The show is also notable for its unique visual style. The scenes in which Alice talks to Mary are shot in a distinctive way that blends live-action footage with computer-generated animation. This technique brings Mary to life and makes her feel like an integral part of the show’s world.

Imaginary Mary is a charming and witty comedy that explores the complexities of relationships and growing up. The show’s strong cast, led by Jenna Elfman, brings the characters to life in a way that makes the audience deeply invested in their stories. While the use of an imaginary friend as a major character may seem unusual, the show uses this device to great effect, providing both humor and emotional depth.

Despite its many strengths, the show only lasted for one season, leaving viewers wanting more. Nevertheless, Imaginary Mary remains a beloved and unique entry in the world of television comedy.
