The story follows the arrival of an alien race known as the Morthren on Earth. They have come to take over the planet and enslave the human race. The main characters in the series are members of a secret government organization known as S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organization). They are tasked with defending Earth against the Morthren and their Synthetics. The organization operates from a secret underground base beneath the streets of London, where they have access to advanced technology and weapons.

Major General David Reece is the leader of S.H.A.D.O. He is a tough, no-nonsense commander who is always on the lookout for ways to stop the Morthren. Major Harry Maxim is Reece's second-in-command. He is a dedicated soldier who is determined to protect his fellow humans from the alien threat.
