As the title suggests, episode 7 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's first season, aka Sorrowful Successor, is an emotionally charged ride that takes the viewers on a rollercoaster of feelings, mostly revolving around Jonathan Joestar's family and their legacy.
The episode opens up with Jonathan and his loyal butler Speedwagon in a cemetery looking at Jonathan's father's grave, who he discovers was not actually his biological father. The realization hits Jonathan hard, and he is devastated by the thought that his whole life was a lie, and he never got to know his real father. Meanwhile, Dio, Jonathan's nemesis, is busy plotting his next move, and he too has something up his sleeve related to Jonathan's mysterious past.
The story then takes us back to when Jonathan was still a boy, and his father was alive. We see the two of them bond, and we get to witness a flashback that explains the mysterious stone mask that Dio found in his father's study. As it turns out, the mask is something that Jonathan's father discovered on a trip to Mexico, and Dio's father stole it from him for his own nefarious purposes. Jonathan and his father were close, and he was devastated by his sudden passing.
The next part of the episode focuses on the ongoing battle between Dio and Jonathan, but there is a twist. Dio, using the stone mask, has transformed himself into a monstrous beast that can control other creatures. He uses this ability to create an army of zombie-like vampires to attack Jonathan's hometown and wreak havoc. Even Speedwagon, Jonathan's closest friend, falls victim to the supernatural army. Jonathan, being the hero that he is, fights fiercely to protect his loved ones from these monsters. However, just when things seem bleak, he receives some unexpected help from an unlikely source that will change the course of the story.
Towards the end of the episode, the story takes a dramatic turn, as Jonathan faces another significant loss, adding to a long list of emotional blows he has been dealt throughout his journey so far. We get to witness the pain he feels as he weeps, grieving the loss of yet another person he loves, questioning his own worthiness and fate. Through his suffering, Jonathan finds the strength to rise up against Dio and his minions, but it is unclear whether he will be able to overcome this obstacle, given all the tragedy he has already faced.
Overall, Sorrowful Successor is a powerful episode that brings up a lot of emotions in the viewer. It is a poignant exploration of the themes of family, legacy, grief, and heroism, that leave a lasting impact on the audience. The episode is a masterclass in storytelling, pacing, and character development, and it sets the stage for the next chapter of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure beautifully.
