In episode 5 of Josh Gates' Destination Truth season 1, the team heads to the Philippines to investigate the mysteries of the island jungles and the historical sightings of the Filipino Lake Monster. The episode begins with Josh and the team traveling to the northernmost island of the Philippines, Batan Island. Here, they explore the dense jungle terrain in search of the elusive "Maw Magook," a creature known to the local tribe as a half-man, half-ape.
The team meets with the tribe's elder, who indicates that sightings of the Maw Magook have been happening for generations. They set up camp and use thermal imaging cameras and motion sensors to try to capture evidence of the creature. After several nights, they hear eerie sounds and see movement around their campsite, but they are unable to capture anything definitive.
Next, the team travels to Lake Caliraya to investigate reports of a monster seen in its waters. As they boat across the lake, they learn about the Lake's dark history, where Filipino guerrilla fighters were massacred by Japanese soldiers during the World War II. They also meet eyewitnesses who describe seeing a creature with large, reptilian eyes and a serpentine body in the lake.
The team conducts several dives into the lake, capturing footage of the lake's depths. They also use a remote controlled diving camera to explore the lake's murky waters. However, despite all their efforts, the team is unable to find any evidence of the creature.
After their unsuccessful dive, the team receives a tip that the creature has been seen near the shore of the lake. They quickly head to the location and set up a night-vision camera overlooking the water. In the middle of the night, they hear a loud splash and see movement in the water, but again are unable to capture anything definitive.
The episode ends with the team packing up and reflecting on their experiences. Although they were unable to capture any concrete evidence of the Maw Magook or the Filipino Lake Monster, they remain optimistic and excited for their next adventure.
