Ep 7. Hibernation

In Land of the Lustrous season 1 episode 7, titled Hibernation, the Gems are preparing for winter as it approaches fast. Their main priority is to ensure that they do not freeze solid like previous winters. This will mean that they need to hibernate during the winter, though not all gems are able to do so. Antarcticite, in particular, needs to be kept busy to avoid freezing, and they also need to retrieve some lost items from the bottom of a frozen lake before the cold sets in.

As the Gems prepare for sleep, they begin to recount tales of previous winters. Phosphophyllite recalls being incapacitated for three months after trying to find a place to hide from the cold. Cinnabar reveals that they have never experienced a winter before and is curious about what it will be like. Antarcticite, however, is not looking forward to it at all, knowing that they will have to stay active to avoid freezing.

Despite Antarcticaite's concerns, they set out on their mission with the help of Jade. The two are able to retrieve the lost items and return to the shore, where they find that Cinnabar has followed them. Cinnabar is drawn to the cold and the quiet of winter, and wants to experience it for themselves despite their weakness to it. Antarcticaite and Jade try to talk Cinnabar out of it, but they refuse to listen and eventually pass out from the cold.

The Gems then begin to settle in for hibernation, with each one finding their own individual spot to rest. Diamond has found a warm, cozy corner of the cave to curl up in, while Bort has chosen a spot near the entrance to protect the others. However, Antarcticaite is still unable to sleep, and decides to take a walk to clear their mind. As they wander, they encounter a strange, new creature that they have never seen before. Unable to identify the creature, Antarcticaite decides to follow it and see where it goes.

As the episode comes to a close, Antarcticaite ends up in a strange, otherworldly place where everything is covered in snow and ice. The creature leads them to a frozen pond, where Antarcticaite sees a reflection of themselves. However, their reflection is different, with a sharper, more angular appearance. Realizing that this is the true form of their gemstone, Antarcticaite reaches out to touch the ice, but is suddenly attacked by a mysterious figure.

Hibernation is a reflective episode that takes a break from the action of previous episodes. This episode focuses on character development and creating a deeper understanding of the world of the Gems. Throughout the episode, the viewer is introduced to different characters and their unique personalities, while also gaining insight into the society they live in. The episode ends with a cliffhanger that will leave viewers curious about the future of the show, and what this strange new world could mean for the Gems.
