In the first episode of Maria the Virgin Witch, titled "Perfect Virgin," we are introduced to our protagonist, Maria, a young witch living in France during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Maria is, as the title suggests, a virgin, but not by choice- she has made a vow of chastity in order to avoid the fate of her mother, who was burned at the stake for witchcraft.
Despite her oath, Maria is not content to simply sit back and watch the war unfold. She uses her magic to help out the farmers and townspeople in her area, but also to intervene in battles and prevent needless deaths. This puts her at odds with both the English and French armies, who see her as a threat to their respective causes.
One day, Maria is visited by a group of angels, who warn her that her interference in human affairs is interfering with the will of God. They order her to cease her activities, but Maria is stubborn and refuses to listen to them. This brings her into conflict with another witch, Viv, who serves as a sort of enforcer for the angels. Viv is much more willing to carry out their orders, even if it means sacrificing innocent lives.
As the episode progresses, we see Maria navigate her relationships with the humans and supernatural beings around her. She has a close friendship with a young soldier named Joseph, who is somewhat smitten with her, but also has to deal with the advances of a notorious womanizer named Garfa. Maria also has a contentious relationship with her familiar, a cat named Artemis, who is constantly chiding her for her recklessness and meddling.
The episode culminates with a dramatic battle between Maria and Viv. It is clear that the two witches are evenly matched, but Viv has the upper hand due to her willingness to use dark magic. However, Maria is able to defeat her by redirecting her own magic back onto her, which causes Viv to lose control and nearly destroys the town.
In the aftermath of the battle, Maria is forced to confront the consequences of her actions. Joseph is understandably shaken by what he has seen, and Artemis scolds her for putting the lives of their human friends in danger. However, Maria is undaunted and remains committed to using her magic to make a difference in the world.
Overall, the first episode of Maria the Virgin Witch sets up an interesting premise and introduces an intriguing cast of characters. It also explores themes of morality, power, and the role of supernatural beings in human affairs. The animation is bright and colorful, and the action sequences are well-done. It will be interesting to see where the show goes from here.
