Marry Me is an NBC comedy series about a couple named Annie and Jake who are navigating the ups and downs of their relationship as they plan their wedding. In season 1, episode 18, titled "Surprise Me," tensions run high as Annie and Jake's wedding day approaches.

Annie (played by Casey Wilson) is a quirky and neurotic writer who often lets her anxiety get the best of her. Jake (played by Ken Marino) is her laid-back, yet practical fiancé who tries to keep everything in perspective. In "Surprise Me," the couple is faced with a number of unexpected challenges that put their relationship to the test.

The episode opens with Annie and Jake discussing their upcoming wedding. Annie is worried that their families won't get along, while Jake is more concerned about finding the perfect caterer. As they argue about the details, Annie gets a call from her father, Kevin (played by Tim Meadows), who announces that he's coming to visit. Annie is thrilled to see her dad, but Jake is less excited. He knows that Kevin can be overbearing and tends to put a damper on their plans.

Meanwhile, Annie's best friend Dennah (played by Sarah Wright Olsen) is dealing with her own relationship issues. She's been avoiding her boyfriend Gil (played by John Gemberling) because she's afraid he's going to propose. When Gil surprises her with a romantic gesture, she panics and makes a run for it.

As the day goes on, Annie starts to feel overwhelmed by all the wedding planning, and Jake suggests they take a break and go for a walk in the park. While they're there, they run into an old friend of Jake's, who has some surprising news. Jake's ex-girlfriend Gwen (played by Cat Deeley) is back in town, and she wants to get together for drinks. Jake is hesitant, but Annie encourages him to go. When Jake and Gwen meet up, he realizes that he still has feelings for her, and he doesn't know what to do.

Back at home, Annie and Kevin bond over their shared love of writing. Annie even shows him some of her work, and Kevin is impressed. When Jake returns, he's conflicted about his feelings for Gwen, and he and Annie get into a huge fight. Annie accuses him of still being in love with Gwen, and Jake denies it. They both storm off, leaving Kevin to mediate.

Meanwhile, Dennah finally confronts Gil and tells him that she's not ready to get married. Gil is disappointed but understanding, and the two agree to work on their relationship.

In the end, Annie and Jake make up and apologize to each other. They realize that they're both stressed out about the wedding and that they need to take a step back and enjoy the moment. As the episode comes to a close, Annie's dad surprises her with a heartfelt wedding gift, and Gwen leaves town, giving Jake some closure.
