In the eleventh episode of Masterchef Canada season 3, titled "Demon at the Pass," the remaining contestants are faced with yet another intense challenge. The episode starts with the Top 5 cooking for 100 guests in a team challenge. The contestants are divided into two teams, and each team has to make four different dishes that cater to different palates. Each plate needs to have an equal number of dishes, and the judges will score the teams based on the overall quality of their dishes.
The contestants are rushed off to the grocery store to pick up their ingredients, and they have only 30 minutes to shop. The teams then get five hours to prep and cook their dishes. As they cook, the contestants are closely watched by the judges, Claudio Aprile, Michael Bonacini, and Alvin Leung. The contestants must work together efficiently, or else they risk running out of time and missing the deadline.
After the five-hour cook period, the teams present their dishes to the judges at the pop-up restaurant. The judges are impressed with the quality of both teams' dishes, and it's clear that the contestants have all improved tremendously since the beginning of the competition. Although each team had its standout dishes, the judges ultimately decide on a winning team, who earns a one-hour head start in the next individual challenge.
For the individual challenge, the Top 5 contestants are taken to the scenic mountain town of Nelson, British Columbia, where they meet chef Jeremy Tucker. Chef Tucker challenges the contestants to cook a dish that best represents the region's cuisine while incorporating one of the local ingredients – oyster mushrooms, elk, or apples. The catch is that the contestants have to cook at 7,000 feet above sea level, where water boils at a lower temperature and atmospheric pressure is lower, making cooking more challenging.
The contestants have 60 minutes to cook their dishes, but as they try to get to work, they quickly realize that the altitude is harder to navigate than they thought. The low pressure and temperature make cooking times longer, and the contestants have to keep checking their dishes to ensure they're properly cooked. As they cook, they're also fighting against the clock – the last contestant to finish risks being sent home.
Once the 60 minutes are up, the contestants present their dishes to the judges, who taste each dish and provide feedback. Chef Tucker joins the table and helps judge the dishes, which all have unique elements of the region's cuisine. The judges are continually impressed with the contestants' creativity in incorporating the local ingredients. However, one dish falls short, and the contestant who prepared it is sent home.
In the end, the Top 4 contestants are left, and they eagerly await the next challenge. "Demon at the Pass" is another intense episode that challenges the contestants' skills, creativity, and ability to work under pressure. The Top 5 showcases their abilities to work together as a team, in addition to working individually to create an exceptional dish. With only four contestants remaining, the competition is getting more intense than ever, and the judges' decisions are becoming more difficult to make.
