McHale's Navy premiered on American television in 1962 and ran for four seasons. The show, set during World War II, followed a group of Navy officers and sailors stationed on a small Pacific island, tasked with defending it against Japanese attacks. The second season of the show aired from 1963 to 1964 and consisted of 36 episodes.

Episode 14 of McHale's Navy season 2 is titled "My Ensign, the Lawyer." The episode begins with Ensign Parker discovering a book on law and becoming convinced that he's an expert on the subject. He starts giving legal advice to his fellow crew members and even prepares a case to be heard in court martial. However, his legal knowledge is put to the test when an actual Navy lawyer arrives on the island to investigate a series of thefts from the base's supply depot.

When the lawyer, Lieutenant Loomis, arrives, he quickly realizes that Parker has been overstepping his bounds with his legal advice. He tries to take Parker under his wing, but Parker is convinced that he knows more about the law than Loomis does. Meanwhile, McHale and his crew are concerned that Loomis is going to discover their involvement in the thefts, which were committed in order to secure supplies for the local orphanage.

As the episode progresses, Parker becomes more and more convinced that Loomis is trying to sabotage his legal career. He prepares for the court martial with the utmost seriousness, even going so far as to wear a suit to the proceedings. However, when Loomis presents evidence that proves McHale's crew was responsible for the thefts, Parker realizes that he needs to set his ego aside and seek Loomis's help to clear his friends' names.

Overall, "My Ensign, the Lawyer" is a lighthearted episode that focuses on the character of Ensign Parker and his newfound obsession with the law. While the episode does tackle some serious issues, such as theft and court martial, it does so in a way that is appropriate for its comedic tone. The episode also features appearances by some of the show's most beloved characters, such as McHale and his crew, as well as an entertaining performance by Loomis, the Navy lawyer.
