Mr. Monk and the Red Herring is the tenth episode of the third season of the television series Monk. The episode was directed by Andre Belgrader and written by Tom Scharpling. It originally aired on the USA Network on August 20, 2004.
The episode begins with Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) and his assistant Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) attending a charity auction held by a wealthy businessman named Warren St. Claire (Robert Loggia). During the event, a diamond necklace worth $2.5 million is stolen, and St. Claire is accused of being the thief. However, he insists that he is innocent and hires Monk to help clear his name.
Initially reluctant to take on the case, Monk is convinced to help St. Claire when he learns that the businessman's daughter Sydney (Sarah Silverman) will be the one to inherit his fortune. Monk is immediately smitten with Sydney and is determined to help her father any way he can.
The investigation quickly becomes complicated when a second necklace is stolen, and Monk discovers that the thief is using a red herring to throw off suspicion. Monk and Natalie must figure out who is behind the thefts and clear St. Claire's name before it's too late.
As they investigate, Monk begins to suspect that Sydney's boyfriend Jake (Timothy Omundson) may be involved in the thefts. However, Sydney insists that Jake is innocent and begs Monk to find the real culprit.
Meanwhile, St. Claire receives an anonymous letter threatening to ruin him if he doesn't leave town. Monk and Natalie work to uncover the identity of the mysterious letter writer and determine if they are connected to the thefts.
Through a series of clues and deductions, Monk and Natalie eventually discover the identity of the thief and solve the case. Along the way, Monk struggles with his feelings for Sydney and must come to terms with the fact that she is already involved with someone else.
As always, Mr. Monk and the Red Herring is filled with the humor, mystery, and quirky characters that have come to define the series. Fans of Adrian Monk will not be disappointed by this entertaining episode.
