In season 11 episode 16 of Naked and Afraid, entitled "Trying to Deal with the Devil," two survivalists are placed in a brutal jungle environment in Sumatra. With little resources and no food, they must endure the unforgiving weather while dealing with a common enemy: swarms of mosquitos.
Amanda, a survivalist from Colorado, and Jonathon, a former military soldier from Texas, are partnered together and dropped off in a nondescript area of Sumatra. They have no idea what to expect except for the fact that they will have to survive for 21 days without clothes, shelter, or food.
As soon as they are dropped off, the reality of the situation quickly sets in. Amanda is nauseous from the boat ride, and Jonathon is already covered in mosquito bites. Despite their dire circumstances, the two find common ground quickly and work together to build a shelter out of vines and bamboo.
The mosquitos continue to be a problem as the days go by, with Amanda and Jonathon trying every method they can to keep the bugs at bay. They cover themselves in mud, use makeshift fans, and even sleep under a smoke-filled fire in an attempt to ward off the relentless pests.
Things take a turn, however, when Jonathon begins to struggle with severe dehydration. His body is shutting down, and he is unable to keep any water down. Amanda is left to care for him and try to keep his spirits up. Despite their dire circumstances, the two get to know each other on a personal level and develop a deep, emotional bond.
As the days progress, Amanda and Jonathon's physical and emotional states are pushed to the brink. They find themselves dealing with more than just mosquitos and lack of resources: they are also forced to confront their own weaknesses and demons. They have to lean on each other for support, and through their struggles, they come out with a newfound sense of strength.
In the end, Amanda and Jonathon make it the full 21 days, defying all odds. They leave the jungle with a newfound appreciation for each other, as well as the importance of survival skills and mental fortitude.
"Trying to Deal with the Devil" is a powerful episode that showcases both the physical and emotional endurance required for survival in harsh environments. Amanda and Jonathon's journey is a testament to the human spirit and the power of companionship in the face of adversity. Naked and Afraid demonstrates once again that it is not just a show about naked people in the wild, but a compelling, often emotional, look at the human condition.
