Naked Science Season 2 Episode 5 Landslides

  • October 31, 2005

Landslides can strike at any time, often with little warning. In this episode of Naked Science, we explore the devastating power of landslides, and how scientists are working to predict and prevent them.

We begin in the Himalayas, where landslides occur frequently due to the rugged terrain and intense monsoon rains. We meet a team of geologists who are studying the region's landslides in an effort to understand their triggers and patterns. Through a combination of fieldwork and computer modeling, they hope to develop more accurate warning systems to help prevent loss of life and property.

Next, we travel to the Pacific Northwest, where landslides are a constant threat to towns and cities built on steep hillsides. We visit Seattle, a city that has experienced several devastating landslides over the years, and meet with experts who are working to mitigate the risks. From building retaining walls to planting trees to stabilize the soil, these measures are vital for protecting the city's residents from the potentially deadly consequences of landslides.

Moving on to Japan, we learn about the country's "rainfall front" – a weather pattern that can trigger massive landslides during the rainy season. We follow the work of a team of engineers who are developing advanced sensors and monitoring systems to detect landslides before they happen. By combining data from satellites, ground sensors, and weather stations, they hope to provide more accurate and timely warnings to local authorities and residents.

In Guatemala, we witness the aftermath of a massive landslide that buried an entire village beneath tons of mud and debris. We hear from survivors and rescue workers about the harrowing experience, and learn about the efforts to rebuild the community in the years since. Despite the tragedy, the people of the village have shown remarkable resilience, and are working to ensure that their homes and families are safe from future landslides.

Finally, we travel to the Swiss Alps, where landslides are becoming more frequent and dangerous due to climate change. We meet with a team of researchers who are using drones and laser scanning technology to map the region's terrain, and to identify areas at high risk of landslides. By combining this data with weather and climate models, they hope to develop new early warning systems that can help protect the people and infrastructure of the region.

Throughout the episode, we see the devastating impact that landslides can have on communities around the world. But we also see the incredible work being done by scientists, engineers, and volunteers to predict, prevent, and respond to these natural disasters. By learning from past events and using cutting-edge technology, we can work to make our world a safer place.
