Tama is a kindly, young girl who has the ability to heal yokai, making her a valuable asset for any yokai who wants to keep others under their control.

Natsume and his friends find Kai's hideout and enter to confront him. Kai is revealed to be a former friend of Natsume's grandmother, Reiko. He had once owned a Book of Friends of his own, but lost it to Reiko in a duel. Since then, he has been envious of her power and has been seeking a way to defeat her. By stealing Natsume's Book of Friends, he hopes to find a way to break the bindings of the yokai Reiko had defeated and put them under his control instead.

As they battle, Kai reveals that he has his own Book of Friends, which he uses to summon the yokai he has defeated over the years. The book is revealed to be incomplete, however, as there are still some yokai that he has not yet defeated. Natsume realizes that this could be his chance to get the Book of Friends back. He challenges Kai to a duel, with the Book of Friends as the prize.

The two engage in a fierce battle, but Natsume is not yet strong enough to defeat Kai. Just when it seems that all is lost, Tama steps in and uses her powers to weaken Kai. Natsume is able to land the final blow, and Kai is defeated.

The episode ends with Kai relinquishing the Book of Friends to Natsume. Natsume is relieved to have the book back in his possession, but he is left wondering just how many more yokai out there are seeking to steal his powerful tool...
