Off Limits Season 2 Episode 4: Hawaii

In this episode of Off Limits, host Don Wildman travels to Hawaii to uncover hidden gems and explore areas that are off-limits to the general public. Hawaii is thought of as a paradise with its beautiful beaches and lush jungles, but Don shows us the other side of the island that most people never see.

The first stop is the Kohala Ditch, an impressive engineering feat that was constructed in the early 1900s to transport water from the wet side of the island to the dry side. Don meets with a local historian to learn about the importance of the ditch to the people of the island and its impact on agriculture. Don then hikes along the ditch, which is no easy feat, as the trail is narrow and precarious at times. Along the way, he discovers abandoned flumes and tunnels that were used to divert water to different parts of the island.

Next, Don heads to Kalaupapa, a remote area on the island of Molokai that was once a leprosy colony. The community was established in 1866, and those with the disease were shipped to the settlement, where they were isolated from society. Don meets with a park ranger to learn about the history of Kalaupapa and the lives of the people who lived there. He also tours the settlement and sees the church, cemetery, and other historical landmarks.

Don then ventures into the jungles of Hawaii to explore a hidden temple. He travels off the beaten path, through thick vegetation and rocky terrain, to reach the temple. The temple is a sacred site for the native Hawaiians, and Don learns about the rituals and ceremonies that were once performed there. The temple is hidden from view and is only accessible by those who know its location.

Next, Don visits a power plant on the island of Oahu that is off-limits to the public. The power plant generates electricity using geothermal energy, and Don gets an up-close look at the process. He meets with technicians who explain how the system works and the benefits of using geothermal energy as a renewable energy source. Don dons protective gear to explore the plant, where he sees the turbines and other equipment used to generate electricity.

Finally, Don heads to Kaneohe Bay, where he explores a sunken ship that is off-limits to the public. The ship was intentionally sunk as part of an artificial reef, and Don dons scuba gear to explore the wreckage. He sees marine life that have made the ship their home, including fish, coral, and other creatures.

In this episode of Off Limits, Don Wildman takes us on a journey to discover the hidden side of Hawaii. From exploring an abandoned ditch to visiting a remote leprosy colony, Don shows us the places that are normally off-limits to the public. Along the way, he learns about the history and culture of the island and the impact these places have had on the people who call Hawaii their home.
