Elena's father comes for a visit, much to the excitement of everyone in the family. She hasn't seen him in a while, and the anticipation has been building up for weeks. Initially, the rest of the family is thrilled to see him, too, but as time wears on, there's tension between Elena and her dad, David, particularly.
As David and Elena talk about her plans for the future, it becomes clear that they have very different opinions. Elena is determined to go to college, but her dad wants her to go to a military academy instead. Her grandmother encourages her to compromise, to take into consideration her dad's wishes, but ultimately, Elena decides to stick with her original plan.
Meanwhile, Penelope gets some news that she wasn't expecting, but she's not sure how to tell her family. She turns to Schneider for some advice. Together, they try to come up with a strategy for breaking the news without causing too much upset.
This episode really digs deep into Elena's character and introduces some tension that has been simmering beneath the surface throughout the series so far. We also see more of Penelope's struggles as a single mother trying to balance her own needs with those of her children. The show manages to tackle some serious issues without sacrificing humor or heart, making for a well-rounded, enjoyable viewing experience.
