Elena, the teenage daughter of the Alvarez family, is having a crisis about her sexual orientation and identity. Her mom, Penelope, tries to help by offering to take her to an LGBTQ+ community center, but Elena feels uncomfortable discussing her feelings with strangers. In addition, Elena feels like she can't talk to her grandma, Lydia, about it because of her conservative views on gender and sexuality.
As Elena navigates her confusion and fear, her younger brother Alex is struggling with finding a Valentine's Day date. He becomes interested in a girl named Shea, who he initially doesn't realize is transgender. When he finds out, he becomes uncomfortable and unsure of how to proceed. Meanwhile, Lydia is excited because her high school sweetheart, Bob, is coming to visit. However, she's worried about telling him that she's divorcing her husband and living with her daughter's ex-husband.
As the various members of the family grapple with difficult issues, they come together to support each other. Penelope opens up about her own struggles with mental health and self-acceptance, Lydia reveals her fears and insecurities, and Elena and Alex learn valuable lessons about compassion and understanding. In the end, everyone comes to a greater understanding of themselves and each other, and they emerge stronger and more united than ever before.
