Watch Oprah & Eckhart Tolle: A New Earth
- 1 Season
In this hour-length discussion program, Oprah and Eckhart Tolle present, analyze, explicate, and apply to real-life situations some of the major ideas presented in Tolle's 2005 book A New Earth. This text provides the program's title and purpose, functions as a kind of scriptural source for content, and even structures the ten episodes of this program. In promotional material, the television program is described as a "course," thus emphasizing the content-heavy format. Oprah reads passages from the text, asks Tolle to comment on them, then accesses a real-life person through Skype or phone in order to discuss a life situation in which the doctrine under discussion can be applied. There is much friendly banter, joking, and teasing that arise in this process as Oprah and Tolle consider the implications his doctrines have on people's lives. Tolle's work is well-suited to this treatment, for it was written in a loose question-and-answer format that probably inspired the style Oprah has selected for the program. The two presenters are clearly close friends -- Oprah refers to Tolle as her "spiritual teacher" or guru but in fact interacts with him on a much more equitable basis. In terms of structure, each episode mirrors one of the book's ten chapters.
