In their struggle to get some sleep, Charlie and Daphne hire a nanny for Diana. However, because Charlie's concern for their daughter is too overbearing, the nanny quits, forcing him to ask Kirsten for help. Meanwhile, when Julia learns that Ned is caring for his autistic brother, she ignores his warnings and shows up at the restaurant where they are eating, only to be stunned at Richie's violent outburst. Wanting to spread some of an unexpected tax refund around, Bailey offers to treat Charlie and Daphne to a night on the town. But the evening is undermined by worries about the baby. As the beleaguered parents arrive home early from their date, Paul shows up looking for Kirsten. And while Charlie promises not to call on her to baby-sit anymore, Kirsten continues to show up on her own. Meanwhile, as Julia tries to understand Richie, Griffin uses his new courier's job to pay a visit on Claudia at school. As Julia and Ned square off over her efforts to understand Richie's poetic ravings, Sarah expresses reservations about sharing in Bailey's financial windfall. And as Kirsten's need to care for the baby creates a rift with Paul, Bailey begins to see that showering everyone with expensive gifts isn't making him any happier. Meanwhile, as Claudia helps Griffin deliver the ferret he's been hired to transport to Boston, they liberate the animal after learning it's going to be killed and then head back to San Francisco together. And once Claudia arrives home unexpectedly and offers to help with Diana, Charlie insists that she return to school at once. Finally, as Ned asks that Julia focus her attention on him, Daphne admits that she doesn't feel the same attachment to the baby as Charlie.
