Ep 10. Fragments

In "Fragments," the tenth episode of Rookie Blue's fifth season, the officers of 15 Division are shaken by the death of a fellow officer, who they'd only met briefly before she met her untimely end. The tragedy prompts a serious self-reflection as both the young up-and-comers and the seasoned veterans consider their own fragile mortality in the line of duty.

Over the course of the episode, the various officers take on different perspectives on their shared grief. For some, the loss is cause to redouble their commitment to enforcing the law and protecting their community. Meanwhile, a new drug called "Black Cut" is taking hold of the streets, leaving a trail of overdoses and medical emergencies in its wake. The cops suspect that the drug is being cut with toxic additives or chemicals, but they can't seem to trace the source of the supply. With so many crises converging at once, 15 Division is stretched to its limit trying to keep up with it all.

The emotional toll of these events is also played out in the personal lives of the officers. Andy and Sam, still processing their recent breakup, find themselves struggling to connect with one another at a crime scene. Meanwhile, Dov tries to offer support to Chloe as she deals with her own traumatic memories and uncertainties. Gail, meanwhile, is eager to take on more responsibility and prove herself to her superiors, but winds up coming off as a little too eager and insubordinate in the process.

Despite the chaos and uncertainty of it all, "Fragments" ultimately emphasizes the importance of working together, supporting one another, and focusing on the good that the officers can do in their jobs. It's a powerful reminder of just how valuable public servants can be, and how they can make a difference even in the face of tragedy and adversity.
