As the third episode of the first season of Samurai Flamenco, E 3 further deepens the development of the show's main character, Masayoshi Hazama, aka Samurai Flamenco.
The episode opens with an introduction to a new superhero in town known as Kaname Joji. Kaname is a muscular superhero who is popular among the city's residents. Samurai Flamenco is adamant in getting to know Kaname well and arranges a live interview with him during a TV show. During their on-air conversation, Masayoshi gets visibly irritated when Kaname hints that Samurai Flamenco is a less "manly" hero compared to him.
This exchange fuels Masayoshi's determination to prove himself as a "true" superhero. He spends the following nights training himself to become stronger and more physically fit way beyond his current limits and even develops his signature "samurai kick." Furthermore, he calls out Kaname for a public challenge on TV with the provisions that they will have a wrestling match to settle who is tougher, the "typical" male superhero or the "other" male superhero.
Throughout the episode, we see Masayoshi's perseverance and grit in training, strongly reflecting his drive to become a hero who can genuinely help people. Moreover, we see the contrast between Masayoshi's "true" heroic personality that is selfless and kind, compared to Kaname's public hero persona based solely on his physique.
In another turn of events, the episode introduces us to Hidenori Goto, Flamenco's friend, and cop. Goto is caught up in an investigation about a phone app that is causing harm to its users. It is revealed that the app, marketed as a fortune-telling app, is actually causing its users to act out its predictions, turning them into petty criminals. Further investigation reveals that the app is a part of a bigger scheme, as evidence points towards the involvement of the notorious gang leader, Aoshima.
The episode closes on a suspenseful note as viewers are left wondering how Kaname will respond to Masayoshi's challenge. Will they fight it out? Will they become friendly rivals?
Overall, episode 3 of the first season of Samurai Flamenco continues to build on the show's themes of heroism, perseverance, and friendship. The episode further develops the main character, Masayoshi Hazama, highlighting his admirable qualities, while also being conscious of his flaws. Additionally, it expands the range of characters by introducing Goto and Kaname, which will be important characters as the series progresses. The introduction of subplots like the phone app investigation and the potential showdown between Kaname and Masayoshi also adds excitement to the show.
